Ribbon-cutting for Alameda Eye Physicians' new location; Volunteer at the Alameda Food Bank; West is Best - Call for Vendors; Upcoming Events & More!

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending two great events in our district.

Firstly, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Alameda Eye Physicians, situated at 1442 Webster St. This establishment stands as possibly the oldest medical practice in the Bay Area, tracing its roots back to 1896.

Their new location, a former bank building erected in 1917, underwent impressive restoration efforts. I was particularly struck by their ability to preserve all the original architectural details while seamlessly integrating contemporary elements for modern functionality.

Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft and Councilmember Trish Herrera Spencer joined in congratulating Alameda Eye Physicians for their outstanding work in revitalizing this historic building.

The second event was a Volunteer Appreciation gathering for the Alameda Food Bank, held in WABA’s Healing Garden and catered by our friends at Calafia Taqueria. Serving over 800 families per week, the Food Bank heavily relies on volunteers for various tasks including food packing, sorting, client check-in, distribution, traffic management, as well as setup and cleanup.

Throughout the event, Executive Director Teale Harden expressed heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers for their tireless dedication and acknowledged their crucial role in combating food insecurity. Food Bank Chair and my buddy, Rebecca Rivkyn, along with Vice Chair Craig Hotti, closed the evening by emphasizing how volunteers work hand in hand with staff to ensure resources are efficiently directed towards service rather than administrative overhead.

Just a reminder, we are still welcoming artists, merchants, food vendors, and vintage sellers to join us for West is Best, June 16, July 4 and August 18. Click here to secure your spot today.

As mentioned last week, my friends Chris James and Showdowns and Great Highway will be taking The Fireside the stage at 8 PM tonight. I invite you to join us and dance away the stresses of the week!
