Halloween Brings Tricks and Treats to Webster Street; 10th Jewelry & More by Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter; Crime Prevention Assessment

Dear WABA Members & Friends,

Preparing for the Holidays
Alameda Police Department advises businesses to schedule a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessment.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a strategy that aims to reduce crime and enhance safety by modifying the physical environment. It focuses on creating spaces that discourage criminal activity and promote community well-being. Key principles of CPTED include:

  1. Natural Surveillance: Designing environments to maximize visibility, making it easier for people to see and be seen. This can include proper lighting, clear sightlines, and the placement of windows and doors.

  2. Natural Access Control: Restricting or controlling access to an area through design features like fencing, landscaping, or controlled entrances, which can deter unauthorized entry.

  3. Territorial Reinforcement: Defining and enhancing a sense of ownership and territorial responsibility among residents, businesses, or users of a space, discouraging potential criminals.

  4. Maintenance and Management: Ensuring that spaces are well-maintained and actively used, which can deter criminal activity and vandalism.

CPTED strategies can be applied in various settings, such as residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and public spaces, to create safer and more secure environments.

Please contact Technician Parker at mparker@alamedaca.gov to schedule CPTED assessments.
