Chinese New Year Celebration
Saturday, February - Corner of Webster & Haight
The Chinese New Year Celebration (also known as the Lunar New Year) is a new tradition on Webster Street. Chinese New Year, also known as the “Spring Festival” in modern Mainland China, is China’s most important traditional festival lasting at least several weeks. Chinese New Year takes place on a different date each year because it is based on the lunar calendar.
Festivities are at the corner of Webster and Haight right by the Webster Farmers Market. We have two Lion Dance troupes for the entertainment from the Toi Shan Family Association. The Lion Dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. Following the Lion Dance there will be a Chinese Traditional Dance, Tai Zhi performance and children dances.
East Ocean Seafood Restaurant, will be providing appetizers for the celebration. East Ocean is a family owned business on Webster, serving the Bay Area for over 30 years.
This event is presented by the West Alameda Business Association, West End Arts & Entertainment District and the Toi Shan Family Association.

Concerts At The Cove
July, August & September
2019 will be a very special year for Alameda’s Concerts at the Cove and the Crab Cove Visitors Center. This year, the music series will celebrate it’s 20th year of offering free, family friendly entertainment to the community. While there is much to be said for carrying on the tradition of June, July, and August concerts, an anniversary year is also a great time to review. After much discussion, it is with great pleasure that the producers of Concerts at the Cove announce that the concerts will start one month later on July 12th and extend to September 13th when Crab Cove and concert goers will enjoy the best weather of the year.
In recognition of this 20 year milestone, the headliners for each concert will be extraordinary starting with the July 12th showcasing Majestic – A Tribute to Journey. The Majestic playlist includes Journey’s most popular songs including Separate Ways, Don’t Stop Believing, Who’s Crying Now and many more.
August 9th will see the East Bay’s own Jazz Mafia take the concerts stage. This is jazz like you have never experienced jazz. The distinct sound is rooted in its five brass instruments and accented by red hot violinist Shaina Evoniuk.
The newly added September 13th concert band selection was a collaboration with Rhythmix Cultural Works and satisfied a strong desire to bring world music to the concerts stage. SambDa is the West Coast’s hottest Brazilian band playing traditional salsa and cumbia blended with funk and reggae influences. The perfect music for a warm September night at Crab Cove and taking in the San Francisco bay view.
In addition to celebrating the Concerts anniversary, the East Bay Regional Park District, as a sponsor for all twenty years of the concerts, will be celebrating its 85th year of managing the region’s most beautiful parkland. The District comprises over 122,270 acres in 73 parks located in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and is the largest urban park district in the United States according to Wikipedia.
2019 marks the 80th anniversary of another major sponsor. The Regional Parks Foundation’s mission to promote greater access to the District’s parks and supports the three concert series by funding many aspects of the production, which allows the community to enjoy these free concerts. The Rotary Club of Alameda will be providing beer and wine for the ninth year with all proceeds going to the community grants program. Last year, the Club distributed over $15,000 to local Alameda nonprofits.
All concerts start at 5:30 PM and run two hours. Food may be purchased at the concert and picnics are welcome. Please no outside alcoholic beverages. Free, secure bicycle valet services are available. Well behaved dogs on leash are welcome.
This event occurs annually in September from 12 to 6 PM on Webster Street (between Central and Taylor Avenues)
Live music and other entertainment, a children’s zone, art vendors, refreshments, community-resource booths and more.
